ESTIMATION_APPROXIMATION 2

By Mr Johari

Key QusWhat's the difference between these 2 words - Approximation Estimation?

On your own, go through the learning activity in the following website
http://www.s-cool.co.uk/gcse/maths/approximations

At the end of the 'visit', you should be able to tell the difference between approximation and estimation, and when each is used in real world...

Write a summary to illustrate the KEY DIFFERENCES between Estimation and Approximation. Submit  your write-up as a Comment under this posting.

1. The difference between approximation and estimation:

X: Random number

Approximation is a small range of numbers that round to X while Estimation is a large range of numbers than round to X

2. Estimation is to think of an answer based on past rough knowledge before measuring the quantity and approximation is to round off a number

3. Differences between Approximation & Estimation.
- Estimation is simplifying a sum to make it easier to do (93 x 101 to 90 x 100). While approximation is simplifying an answer (3.35 to 3.4).

4. Estimation is rounding thing figures to make the sum simple to do

Approximation is simplifying or rounding of a number. e.g. 3.91 to 3.9

5. Estimating is rounding up numbers to solve a problem easily, for example this equation: 936 x 27. We can approximate the numbers to be 900 x 30, so it is easier to solve. Approximation is basically rounding up the numbers. For example, 2.3635 to be estimated to 2.36

6. approximation is simply the rounding of numbers, however estimation is the approximation of a number statement.

7. Estimation is rounding off numbers to solve equations easily and approximation is the rounding up of numbers.

8. Estimation is rounding off numbers to make solving questions easier. Approximation is just rounding off of a number

9. Approximation is closer to the actual number. Estimation is in a range.
Example: A time in a run is 10mins
Aprrox has to be between 9-11 mins
Estimation is from 5-15 mins
Estimation is rounding off numbers to solve questions easily and Approximation is rounding up of numbers.

10. estimation is rounding off the nearest number to the nearest decimal place or ten or hundred while approximation is when you use the given number with the number of decimal places it has and estimate it from that given number of decimals. approximation adapts.

11. Estimation is rounding up the numbers for easier calculation and the answer would still be almost the same.
eg. 10.7x13.2≈11x13
=143 (141.24 is the original answer)
Approximation is rounding up the answer to be able to read it more easily without any decimals, just whole number itself etc.
eg. 10.7x13.2=141.24
≈141

12. Estimation is used for rounding up numbers to for easier calculation(e.g. 545x 12 can be done like this 550x 10)

Approximation is used for simplification of decimals like 1.2345 can be simplified/ rounded down to 1 so that it is easier for us to calculate the workings.

13. Estimation is rounding the number to the nearest number to make it easier to solve a math problem while approximation is rounding the to the nearest unit.

14. Estimation is used for rounding numbers up. Approximation is used for the simplification of numbers with many decimals.

15. Estimation is closer to the actual answer and more accurate while approximation is used for easier things that is roughly the number.

16. Estimation is used to make a calculation easier to solve. Approximation is basically rounding off a number.

17. Estimation is rounding numbers off for an easier calculation, while approximation is used for rounding off a number with several decimal places to make it easier to read or calculate.

18. While approximation is closer to the actual number and more accurate, estimation is a range of numbers used to check if your answer is reasonable.

19. Approximation is used to round off a number to several decimal places but estimation is rounding off a number for easy calculation
